Record-breaking heat scorches the Tampa Bay area

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) -- If you thought today felt hotter than usual in Tampa Bay, you were correct!

Many areas set new high temperature records for today.

Tampa's temperatures at the weather site at the airport hit 98 degrees, breaking the previous record for today of 96 degrees that was set in 1989.

It's notable that this site has never hit 100 degrees before and has only hit 99 degrees twice in recorded history.

Sarasota warmed up to 99 degrees, breaking the previous record of 97 degrees, which was set in 1955.

Easterly and Northeasterly winds allowed coastal areas like Sarasota and St. Petersburg to get just as warm as inland areas. The direction of the breeze prevented the sea breeze from forming and cooling the coastline down.

St. Petersburg also set a new record of 96 degrees, just edging out the previous record of 95 degrees from 1958.

Ruskin hit the triple digits this afternoon, topping out at 100 degrees, which shattered the previous high temperature record for the day from 2019, which was 95 degrees.

The heat continues into tomorrow's forecast, but a slight increase in humidity means we probably will not break as many high temperature records.
