TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) -- Beryl is heading toward Jamaica as a major hurricane ripping through parts of the Caribbean, and people in Tampa are starting to worry about the safety of their loved ones who are on the island.
"Speaking of it now, I am a little bit nervous because my mom’s house was recently renovated, so that is my main concern. I am like, 'Wow if this hits and it damages,'" local Jamaican Kdene Bolton said.
The storm is on a path toward Jamaica and the Cayman Islands, and residents in Tampa are growing concerned for their loved ones at home.
"It is heading directly towards them. My sister was saying the businesses were closing half the day and letting them go home so they can get some supplies," Jerk Hurt owner Andrew Ashmeade said.
Ashmeade, a Jamaica native, said his sister who is living in the area said the preparedness mechanisms have been in high gear.
"I think they are going to let them off early, so they can go home. But she says the supermarket is already full and people are trying to get their supplies, running around trying to get stuff nailed on their houses,” Ashmeade said.
