TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A Tornado Watch has been issued until 6:00 a.m. Friday for Manatee, Hernando, Hillsborough, Polk, Hardee, Pinellas, Sarasota, Citrus, Pasco, and Highlands counties.

As Hurricane Helene strengthens and races through the Gulf of Mexico today, our impacts increase today. Watch for rounds of rain as the feeder bands wrap around the system today. Overall rainfall accumulations won't be significant in many areas because of how fast the system is moving. Expect 4-6 inches near the coast and 2-4 inches inland.

Winds pick up as Helene gets closer. Most of the Tampa Bay area will experience tropical storm-force wind gusts. Coastal communities may reach hurricane strength. Watch for falling debris, and power outages are likely.

The biggest threat for our area will be the storm surge and rise in water as the storm gets closer to the Panhandle. That's when our winds become onshore and drive gulf water toward shore. There is a chance areas will experience record water levels tonight into tomorrow morning.

Conditions improve during the day on Friday, but passing showers are still possible. It will be extremely warm and humid. A trail of tropical moisture lingers over the Florida peninsula, so rain chances remain elevated through the weekend. These downpours may make already flooded areas worse.
