TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — The National Hurricane Center is monitoring an area of potential development in the Caribbean Sea, just as Hurricane Helene wreaked havoc on the southern United States this week.

According to the NHC, a low pressure area could form at the western Caribbean by the middle of next week.

Conditions favor slow development before it enters the Gulf of Mexico. However, models do not predict it as a threat to Florida like Helene was.

"Environmental conditions will be conducive for slow development as this moves toward the Yucatan and the west central Gulf of Mexico," Max Defender 8 Meteorologist Eric Stone said. "It has a 30% chance of development over the next 7 days and if it does happen to develop, early models indicate a weaker system moving well to the west of Florida's panhandle."

Another area of disturbance is expected in the eastern Atlantic. It has a 30% chance of development but will be far from the continental United States.

While Helene diminishes, Hurricane Isaac and Tropical Storm Joyce churn far off in the middle of the Atlantic, posing no threat to us.
